This is just one of the many pieces of land the university is hoping to sell off to meet the shortfall in their finances and the ever increasing costs of the Debenhams building. The Folley playing fields in Cheltenham, formerly playing fields on which the uni has refused bookings since 2019, despite a shortage of pitches locally, has met with substantial local objections. As well as many objections from locals including a petition, there are also objections from Sports England and Cheltenham Borough Council, and a 10 page list of conditions from Gloucestershire Highways. The university is also selling off Hardwick Campus in Cheltenham. While much of this campus is brownfield site (university buildings) the marketing materials suggested that Hardwick Green could also be developed. Hardwick Green is similar to the site in this article with a long history of community use for recreation and dog walking. But unlike this site, it does not have prior planning permission for development.
I thought I heard, in a BBC Glos. report, that this land had been gifted to the community in someone's will. Did I hear right? If so, how could it have been sold? Something fishy here.......
I live very close to the land! The access to it for development purposes would be mayhem! With college parking through the week and Rugby most weekends it’s a nightmare as it is! The roads are nothing other than dangerous.
I personally only bought my house because of the feeling of space around me! And the lovely field for dog walks. This is a quieter dog walking field to plock court.
An agreement had been agreed to a local youth football team to call home! But at the last minute the university pulled the plug out of the blue leaving the children no where to play! This club is an inclusive club offering sport to lots of children with disabilities. Children who would otherwise sit on benches as they are not good enough to play in other bigger clubs teams.
It will also massively devalue the homes in the community also. I mean who wants to look on yet another development of flats or houses?
I feel so sorry for the residents backing on to the field. It’s there life savings and investment down the pan as no one wants peeping toms into gardens or homes so there expensive luxury homes, will become average homes in value!
Leave it as it is! Compromise with the community! For once, think with ur hearts and not power and money!!!
At the end of the day if this land belongs to someone else it’s theirs. Its not public land and it’s not essential to have a gate in your back garden or needed on someone’s else’s property.
