Saturday roundup of Gloucestershire news - 10th May
Including VE Day anniversary marked in Gloucester, road safety stories across the county and Cotswold restaurant creates cocktail named after 'resident' duck
Dear readers - the 80th anniversary of VE Day has been the showcase event of the week, including many communities in Gloucestershire coming together to mark the occasion.
Atop Robinswood Hill in Gloucester a beacon was lit to commemorate all those who sacrificed themselves for the freedoms we have today. Children including those involved with the Scouts came with their parents to take in the beautiful sunset and witness the beacon roar to life - a moment which will be cherished.
The army on the frontline, the navy at sea, the air force in the sky and those who stayed on the home front including the farmers growing our food during wartime, our intelligence services and emergency crews who put out fires as the Blitz raged - we will remember them.
VE Day is a part of our shared national story and to celebrate Victory in Europe on May 8th 1945, many of you have held street parties, church services and a minutes silence at memorials to the fallen.
A reflective piece on this week’s events from the county will arrive in your inbox this weekend, but for now here is this week’s Saturday roundup.
